CASAA investigators are deeply invested in understanding how, and under what circumstances, people change undesirable behavior including the use of alcohol, illicit drugs, and gambling. Termed mechanisms of behavior change research, CASAA investigators have programmatic lines of research investigating processes of behavior change that occur within the context of motivational interviewing, behavioral couples therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, mindfulness-based treatments for addiction, and community-based 12-step programs. The study of behavior change necessarily involves the application of advanced quantitative longitudinal modeling techniques and scientific collaborations across addiction-focused disciplines. Recognizing these needs, several CASAA investigators are acknowledged experts in advanced statistical modeling and CASAA support has been instrumental in creating and sponsoring the annual mechanism of change pre-conference workshop held at the Research Society on Alcoholism.
