Co-Investigator: Dr. Robert J. Meyers
Dr. Slesnick and her team of colleagues at UNM CASAA are conducting the STAR project. STAR is funded by NIDA and is in its third year of study. In this four year project, homeless youth with substance abuse problems are randomly assigned to either (1) Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA) + adult mentoring, or (2) service as usual through a drop-in center (no treatment control). All youth are contacted again at 3 and 6 months. The goal of this project is to evaluate the efficacy of CRA and the HIV intervention as compared to service as usual by investigating reductions in substance use, HIV risk, negative affect, social stability, and related problem behaviors.
