Primary Research Area

My research examines stress and coping as risk and protective factors for alcohol and substance use. I modify educational materials and skill development practices to increase relevance and relatability for underserved populations. Educational materials and coping skill development trainings should not be one-size-fits-all. My work adapts evidence-based information to reach a wider audience in a way in which they connect the information to their life.

Importance of research for New Mexico: New Mexico is consistently within the top ten states in the country with the highest rates of alcohol and drug use-related deaths. New Mexico invested over $800 million in the Medicaid behavioral health programs which is primarily focused on treatment for alcohol and substance use disorders. Yet, the state has invested very little towards upstream prevention programs and tailored interventions specifically for rural, low-income, and ethnically diverse populations in the state.

Know Your Pour

This study is focused on testing a new infographic that can be used in healthcare provider offices (on campus and in the community) to help patients estimate their alcohol servings per week. This information helps providers assess the patients’ risk for alcohol use disorder and intervene at the earliest signs of heavy or high-risk drinking. Many popular alcohol products are served in containers that are more than one serving per container. For example, one “Buzz Ball” is two servings of alcohol. One serving of liquor is only 1.5 oz, but individuals often do not know this information or are not measuring their serving size. This infographic can be printed onto magnets to increase awareness of serving sizes and decrease mindless pours and overconsumption.
