Kamilla Venner, PhD, an Alaska Native Researcher, believes that through bringing together stories of how Native Americans have resolved alcohol dependence, hope can be provided to those who are still struggling with alcohol problems. Through the University of New Mexico's Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and Addictions (CASAA), and supported by the National Institutes on Alcohol Abuse and Addictions, Native Americans who have overcome alcohol problems are invited to come share their story in a confidential study.
Many people, both Native and non-Native, hold erroneous beliefs about Native Americans and alcohol problems. Yet, recovery stories are rarely in the spotlight. We hope this study will help spread the positive message that Native Americans can and do overcome alcohol problems. She also hopes that by hearing success stories from Native Americans, we can improve current substance abuse treatments and improve treatment outcomes in Native communities.
We are recruiting people from all tribes and from all paths of recovery. Forty-five community members have completed participation, and most have reflected that the process was a good experience, highlighting how far they have come since their prior dependence.
Please feel free to tell others about this confidential study. If you are Native American and would like to share your story of how you successfully overcame an alcohol problem, please contact Kamilla Venner at (505) 925-2377 or kamilla@unm.edu.
Your story may help other Native Americans be successful, too.
