Principal Investigator: J. Scott Tonigan, Ph.D.
K02-AA00326-01

This K02 award consists of a 5-year career development plan to enlarge Dr. Tonigan's knowledge in psychopathology, psychopharmacology, and statistics for the purposes of expanding on his programmatic research on Alcoholics Anonymous.  Four career objectives were specified, and five mechanisms were outlined to achieve these goals. One mechanism, an AA-focused conference (R13) for senior scientists, bridges career and research objectives and offers a platform to set priorities in AA research for the next decade. Candidate knowledge gains are instrumental to understanding AA-related change mechanisms, and for transitioning from a senior methodologist to an independent scientist. A cohort longitudinal study (N = 300) was recently awarded to Dr. Tonigan, PI, R01-AA014197-01, with participants recruited from community-based AA, outpatient, and inpatient settings.  The study has five aims including, assessing the moderator effects of psychopathology and illicit drug use on alcohol severity and AA affiliation, prospective tests of whether AA disaffiliates continue prescribed AA-related practices, and to discern whether AA distinctions between abstinence and sobriety are singly or jointly manifest in well-being, spirituality, and altered values.  The career plan strives to provide knowledge gains to facilitate more ecological study of AA, while maintaining rigorous quantitative scientific methods.
