Primary Research Interests:
My research aims to improve treatment outcomes among American Indians/Alaska Natives. Currently I am the principal investigator of a research grant to adapt motivational interviewing and the community reinforcement approach with and for the Zuni people. We will conduct a randomized controlled trial comparing the MI/CRA adaptations to treatment as usual at the Zuni Recovery Center. In addition, I am examining how AI/AN have resolved alcohol dependence to highlight strengths of the culture that may inform future substance abuse treatment.

Current projects and collaborations:
  • Zuni MI/CRA: Adapting and testing two evidence-based treatments (MI and CRA) in the Zuni population
  • Clinical Trials Network-Southwest Node: Assessing the prevalence of methamphetamine and other drug use problems and strengths among American Indian/Alaska Native populations in New Mexico
