Dr. Kamilla Venner, an Alaska Native Researcher and Nadine Tafoya, MSW, a New Mexico Native Treatment Provider, are currently conducting a pilot study.  Together, with contributions from Native community members and treatment providers, this pilot study seeks to achieve two goals:  to adapt Motivational Interviewing (MI) for Native Americans in treatment for alcohol abuse and dependence and to develop a manual to guide the practice of MI with Native American clients.  This goal will be achieved through three separate focus groups conducted during the summer and fall of 2005.  We aim to have a completed manual ready for feedback by September 2005.

At this time, we are continuing to look for Native American treatment providers interested in reviewing and providing feedback on our MI Manual.  If you are interested in getting more information, please call (505) 925-2343 to speak with Sarah Feldstein, MS (swfeld@unm.edu).
