We have received a $203,000, 1.5 year grant from the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) on substance abuse and crime among American Indians.  This is an epidemiological study which documents the actual, specific alcohol and drug involvement among all arrestees (by cause and criminal profile) on two reservations in the Northern Plains:  Sisseton-Wahpeton, South Dakota and Turtle Mountain, North Dakota.  The substance abuse pattern of arrestees will be documented for a one year period among the Lakota and Chippewa Indians of these reservations.  In addition some psychological and intelligence profiles will be gathered and produced for a random sample of offenders and repeat offenders.  While seemingly a very simple concept and methodology of drug and alcohol testing combined with key behavioral variables, such a detailed study has never been completed before.  Phyllis Trujillo, Piyadasa Kodituwakku, Ph.D., and the Principal Investigators are funded on this grant along with two full-time tribal employees, one each in South Dakota and North Dakota.
