The MIDAS Project is being conducted at UNM-CASAA. The MIDAS Project is designed to yield new knowledge on motivation to change drug use behavior. We are testing a brief motivational counseling intervention to help people change problematic drug use.

People interested in participating in the project are screened for eligibility (age, general health, drug use, willingness to be videotaped, etc.) by the CASAA Recruitment Officer, Ann Armijo. Participants then complete a 4 to 6 hour assessment which includes an interview, questionnaires, and other interactive tests. After the assessment, each participant is randomly assigned to receive or not receive an interview with a specially trained Motivational Enhancement Therapist. The therapy session lasts about 90 minutes and is videotaped to allow additional research about effective communication in therapy. All participants are asked to come in for 90-minute "check-ups" at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after initial contact. Participants can earn up to $210 in gift certificates and cash for completing the study.

We have completed four phases of the study thus far - working with individuals from an inpatient drug treatment program and another with outpatients here at CASAA. Currently the follow-up interviews are in progress and we anticipate completing them in the summer of 2000. The National Institute on Drug Abuse has also funded a supplement to the MIDAS grant which allows us to interview drug users who are neither inpatients nor outpatients.
